The photo of the sailing club is of 'VNSC' Victoria Nyanza Sailing Club at Kaazi, some 7 miles outside Kampala. The club/facility was widely known as 'Kaazi'. The photographer was standing on Kaazi Point which was not on the sailing club land, but from where fishermen in canoes would unload their catches. Kaazi point is also used by the Boy Scout Movement. A world jamboree was held there circa 1965/1966 and some development of the site has been undertaken in recent years by the scouts. The photo would have been taken before the lake rose resultant from the construction of the Owen Falls Dam at Jinja (circa 1951/52) and subsequent heavy rainfall/flooding in the early 1960's. My recollection was that the level of the lake rose to it's highest point by about 1965. As an indication of how much the lake rose, the jetty in the foreground of the photo was completely submerged and indeed, two subsequent jetties were constructed - wooden planks over steel section - to allow the sailing dinghies to heave to on race days. It was not possible to access the foreshore by car - see photo - at this end after the lake had risen. The white building in the background on the cliff is the 'Dormy House' com I am grateful to Oliver Keeble for supplying the information above - thanks, Oliver. |
