Bremer Stadtmusikanten - the symbol of Bremen.  The bronze sculpture by Gerhard Marcks dates from 1951 (left);  kids' version in Markplatz (centre);  on a plate in a street trader's stall (right).  For one reason or another the four animals were to be disposed of by their respective owners.  They all met up on the way to Bremen where the Donkey had assured them that they could join the Town Band.  On the way they came across a house in which they thought they might be able to spend the night.  But the house had been taken over by robbers and the animals climbed up on each other's back and peered in the window.  The robbers took off in fright at seeing a "monster" and, as far as I know, the animals have lived in the house ever since - they never actually joined the Town Band!  - VIDEO CAPTURES Malcolm McCrow

Like Bremen, the old town is a fair walk from the Hauptbahnhof, but once you get on the trail of the Pied Piper (der Rattenfänger) (left) it is simply a matter of following the rats stencilled on the pavement!  Bungelosenstraße (No Drums Street) leading from the Gastätte Rattenfängerhaus (Pied Piper Inn) (right) is still a street where music is banned.  - VIDEO CAPTURES Malcolm McCrow
