Memories of East Africa |
|
The aim of this site is to provoke memories of a by-gone age through photographs taken at the time. It is not an attempt to win prizes for the photographs nor the presentation. I started with my own collection of photographs taken with very basic equipment, but people have kindly sent me both their own contemporary and, by way of contrast, present day photographs. A list of acknowledgements is provided at the foot of this page. Also provided is a selection of links to other East African related sites. |
The school grounds were dominated by the Water Tower. The black and white photographs were all taken in 1956-7 when Arthur Brindley was Headmaster. The colour photographs were taken on a return visit to the school in 1962 and recently by David Baird's son in 2003. |
The photographs were all taken between 1958 and 1961 - all the colour pictures being taken after September 1960. The House Photographs and the black and white aerial photograph were all organised officially by the school. Recently I have been able to add contemporary views of Lenana School as it appears in 2003. I am grateful to Oliver Keeble and David Baird for supplying these photographs. |
The Combined Cadet Force photographs feature the 1958 General Inspection with colour pictures taken during 1961 Annual Camp at Nanyuki. The colour pictures of the General Inspection were all taken in 1962. |

Most of the photographs are of Kampala, Entebbe and Masaka. Jinja, Fort Portal and Tororo are represented by their landmarks. Drive out the Kampala Masaka Road with its characteristic swamps and visit the Uganda Equator. All black and white pictures of Masaka were taken in 1957. All colour photographs date from 1960. Post Card photographs from Ian Hamilton's Collection date from the early 50s. |
Photographs of classic 1950s aircraft not belonging to East African Airways and including a Vickers Valiant and aircraft of the USAF, Royal Rhodesian Air Force and the Ethiopian Air Force. |
Personal photograph of President Kenyatta and some well-known Nairobi landmarks. |
